Neil Simon's California Suite ran for several years on Cunard Queen Victoria and Alan Aykbourn's Relatively Speaking recently closed on
P&O Aurora after also having had long runs on Oriana and Adonia. I am currently responsible for the new Aardman Wallace and Gromit show, All Hands on Deck, on P&O Arvia and The Outsider, a musical on Cunard Queen Elizabeth.
I have 35 years experience directing dramas, comedies, farces, thrillers, musicals, and pantomimes.
I love a challenge, be it a new work or a classic, in a theatre or site specific and I'm used to working to a tight budget.
I have worked with many well known and highly experienced actors, stars of the big and small screen.
I have directed plays by Alan Ayckbourn, Henrik Ibsen, Alan Bennett, William Shakespeare, Ray Cooney, Terry Johnson, Noel Coward, Neil Simon, John Godber, Richard Harris, J B Priestley, Mike Leigh, Charles Dickens, Agatha Christie, John Chapman, Lee Hall, Jean Paul Sartre and Francis Durbridge amongst many others.
Please scroll down for my full CV.
I believe in creating a safe, supportive, respectful and fun rehearsal environment where all members of the team; actors , stage management and designers, feel empowered and able to be brave and release their creativity. I try to be a consensual director and believe it is important that everyone feels they own the production.
Having been an actor I understand the way actors work and realise that everyone has a different way of working; some actors jump in the deep end, others prefer to put a toe in the water first, my job is to ensure they all swim and reach the finishing line together!
I have directed shows and taught in drama schools and for drama training organisations, so I understand all the particular challenges of directing students.
I enjoy the combination of teaching as one directs.
Over the years I have also taught at international theatre summer schools and run bespoke workshops and classes for amateur groups all over Europe and the UK.
Teaching topics include:
acting in Shakespeare, Brecht, High Comedy and Farce. Devised theatre, physical theatre, poetry speaking, basic voice and movement for the stage and improvisation.
